The smell of a chip on coal, held still. Hindi oud distilled in Assam, aged eighteen years, rested another four in glass. Cade and black pepper on top, ash and birch tar underneath. Built to sit on wool the way real bakhoor does — heavy at first, then in the fabric for days.

On skin
Ten to twelve hours on skin, two days on wool. Close to the body for the first hour, then holds about a metre.

Smoke arrives in three parts.

The Coal
Cade, olibanum tears, black pepper, ash
Hot and dry for ten minutes. Reads like a coal just lit.

Heart
The Chip
Hindi oud (Assam, 18 years), papyrus, dry cedar
Oud takes the centre around minute twenty and holds it six hours.

Base
The Smoke
Birch tar, labdanum, sandalwood, benzoin
Settles into wool and hair. Still there next morning, fainter and flatter.
