    The Coal

    Cade, olibanum tears, black pepper, ash

    Hot and dry for ten minutes. Reads like a coal just lit.

  2. Heart

    The Chip

    Hindi oud (Assam, 18 years), papyrus, dry cedar

    Oud takes the centre around minute twenty and holds it six hours.

  3. Base

    The Smoke

    Birch tar, labdanum, sandalwood, benzoin

    Settles into wool and hair. Still there next morning, fainter and flatter.

The house

The oud is distilled in Assam, in copper, eleven days to a batch. It reaches Ajman as raw oil and sits four years in glass before anyone smells it again. Nothing is accelerated. The number on the base of each bottle is the year it went into glass, not the year it was sold.

Materials

Four things we will not substitute.

Every one of these has a cheaper synthetic that smells close enough for most houses. We buy the material.

    Hindi oud

    Assam, India

    Eighteen-year agarwood, copper still, eleven days to a batch.

  2. 02

    Taif rose

    Ta'if, Saudi Arabia

    Cut at dawn through April. Twelve thousand roses to the kilo.

  3. 03

    Labdanum

    Andalusia, Spain

    Boiled from rockrose resin. Leather, with no animal in it.

  4. 04

    Birch tar

    Kainuu, Finland

    Dry-distilled bark. A struck match, held still.

How to burn

You already know this. Here it is anyway.

  1. 01

    Light the coal

    Hold the disc to a flame at one edge until it sparks across. Set it in the burner and wait five to ten minutes, until the red is gone and the whole face has ashed over grey.

  2. 02

    Place one chip

    One chip on the ash, not on live coal. It should smoulder and thread smoke upward. If it flames or blackens fast, the coal is too hot — wait, or lift the chip onto a piece of foil.

  3. 03

    Take the smoke

    Open your collar or cuffs over the burner and let the smoke run up through the fabric, thirty to sixty seconds a side. Hair last, held above the smoke, not in it. Close the room. Leave it.

One chip is roughly twenty minutes. Wool holds it for two days.
